Amritsar:
BJP lawmaker and former cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu has said he will soon approach Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and request him to grant heritage status to Amritsar.
He said he had raised the issue in the Lok Sabha on Friday and was supported by all MPs, cutting across party lines, from Punjab.
However, his forceful demand for declaring Amritsar a heritage city was turned down by the government in the House, Sidhu said.
Rejecting the demand, the government maintained there was no legal provisions to do so in India or under the UNESCO rules, the BJP MP said.
Apparently upset over this, Sidhu said he would soon approach the Prime Minister and request him to grant heritage status to holy city of Amritsar.
