On a busy street in Dadar in Mumbai, a lady doctor was allegedly slapped and sworn at by three unidentified men. All this, while a policeman stood watching.

Dr Sulbha Arora (33), an in-vitro fertility specialist who runs Deccan Fertility Clinic at Shivaji Park, said this happened while she was on her way to the clinic.

"I was parking my car near the Meenatai Thackeray statue.  After giving the indicator, I was taking a U-turn to get on to the other side of the street. An oncoming speeding bike, instead of stopping, raced towards me and swerved to avoid hitting my car. The biker began to swear at me," she said.

This led to a heated exchange of words between the doctor and the biker who was joined by the pillion rider.

"Suddenly, a man in a crisp white kurta-pyjama sidled up and slapped me in the face," said Arora .

"An uniformed policeman standing behind him started yelling at me while the man in kurta continued to slap me. This was more appalling."

Arora said she was unsure if the policeman was posted at the spot or whether he was deployed as a security personnel for the kurta-clad man.

"Nobody came to my rescue. Is this a city that claims its women are safe?" asked Arora who lodged a complaint at Shivaji Park police station yesterday.

"A case has been registered against the three unidentified men for outraging a woman's modesty, causing hurt among other sections, said investigating officer N M Gadegaonkar.
