Smiling in class leaves Bangalore boy with a broken tooth

Bangalore: A class IV student of Balwin Boys High School in Bangalore had his front tooth partially broken when the class teacher hurled a wooden duster at him for smiling in the class.

Mohammed Ayman was later taken to a dentist who advised a root canal treatment after an X-ray.

Ayman's father, Mohammed Irfan, has filed a complaint with the Ashok Nagar police station.

Irfan said that though the incident happened at around 9.30 am, the teacher, Irene Shah, informed the parents only at around 10.30 am.

"She called my wife and asked her to come for counseling as Ayman was giving her trouble. My wife went to the school at around 2.30 and found him lying on the last bench with his face swollen. She asked Shah what had happened, but failed to get a convincing reply.  She immediately went to the principal and complained. Shah apologised and said that she was ready to pay for the medical expenses," said the father.

"She used to charge Rs 250 per hour for private tuitions for Ayman. We used to give her Rs 50 for conveyance everyday and she didn't even bother to inform us before hitting him," added the father..

Baldwin school's principal Dinakar Wilson termed the incident as 'unfortunate' and said that he had suspended Irene Shah and initiated an inquiry as per the rules.

"I was told that it was an accident and the duster slipped from Shah and hit Ayman," he said.

The principal added, "I have instructed the staff that beating a student amounts to corporal punishment as per the law."

When asked whether his school allowed private tuitions, he said they are not allowed.

"We did not know until we received a complaint from Ayman's parents. We will hold an inquiry and will take appropriate action," he assured.
