Solar power plant commissioned at Vaishno Devi

Katra: In a major initiative for use of renewable energy, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB) commissioned a solar power plant at the temple and a solar water heating unit at its base camp Katra.

A solar water heating system with 5000 litres per day capacity has been installed at Shakti Bhawan here and a five KW power plant set up at Bhawan area where the cave shrine is located, CEO of SMVDSB R K Goyal said.

The two projects, aimed at utilising and demonstrating the potential of solar power, have been set up with support from the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy under its Special Area Demonstration Projects Scheme, he said.

Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra, who is also the Chairman of the SMVDSB, has asked the Chief Executive Officer to identify various locations between Katra and the shrine for establishing similar projects.

The CEO said two other projects - a biogas plant of four tonnes per day capacity and a solar emergency lighting system - are also being planned on a time-bound basis.

Vohra has also called upon all the hotel owners at Katra to set up solar plants in every hotel for saving power.

The CEO said on the Governor's instructions, 33,000 plants of different species and 4000 flowering plants are being planted during the current rainy season to beautify the tracks leading to the shrine.

The other significant initiatives launched by the shrine board this year include a number of fire prevention measures in identified sectors and providing comprehensive disaster management training to the board's employees.
