Mumbai:
It's time to say goodbye to long queues at Regional Transport Offices. The motor vehicle department's plan of delivering driving licences and registration documents of vehicles to people's homes by post will see the light of day in a fortnight or so.
DNA had in April 2009 reported about the transport department's plan to implement the scheme.
Transport commissioner Dilip Jadhav told DNA discussions with the postal department have concluded and the government too has given its go-ahead.
"The earliest beneficiaries of the scheme will be the citizens of Mumbai and Thane," he said. "Gradually, the scheme will be extended to the rest of the state. After this, in the second phase, we will also start sending citizens their vehicle's registration certificates by post."
The additional fee for the facility is expected to be Rs 50 at least. The delivery will take two to three days.
The scheme was planned after police officers informed the motor vehicles department that the addresses provided by many licence-seekers are fake. Though the scheme was scheduled to start in June, it got stuck in red tape.
