Soon, private cabs under emergency services in Mumbai?

Mumbai: A week after Meru cab drivers went on a day-long flash strike, the state Transport Department plans to moot a proposal to include private taxis in the 'emergency public service' category.

This would mean private taxi drivers will have to give advance notification if they plan to go on strike.

About 1,000-odd Meru cab drivers had kept off the roads on May 4, the day railway motormen went on a  hunger strike, to protest the 'unjust' sacking of some drivers.

Now, at least 60 Meru drivers have quit and joined other private taxi services.

A delegation of Meru drivers had met the administration with a list of 38 complaints. "Our demands have been pending for long, and moving out was the only option," said Indrajit Sharma, who has just quit Meru.
