Spurned lover stabs and robs doctor, arrested

Mumbai: Dr Harish Tolia, 53, would never have expected that being a well-wisher would cost him so dearly. The Ghatkopar-based doctor was stabbed by his compounder on Saturday afternoon.

According to the police, 17 year-old Anmol Chaudhary who worked as compounder in Tolia's clinic, was in love with a boy who wasn't interested in her. She confided in Tolia and added that she might commit suicide. A concerned Tolia informed the girl's parents which is when a furious Chaudhary decided to kill the doctor. Since the boy she loved said he needed money, she planned to kill the doctor, then rob him.

On Saturday, as per the police, Chaudhary approached Tolia, with her aunt, complaining of stomach pain.

Soon, she instructed her aunt to leave, saying she had to speak to Tolia and would return home to Bhatwadi, in Mumbai, later. "Once the aunt left, at around 12.35 pm, the accused stabbed Tolia with a razor blade on his neck and hands," said Chandrakant Puri, Inspector, Ghatkopar Police Station. She then made a run with his wallet.

"She had been working with Dr Tolia for six months and had quit after he had told her parents about her failed love affair and suicidal tendencies. She would ask the doctor to give her tablets to save her from committing suicide. The doctor was worried about her and informed her family," said the officer.

"She stabbed him and ran with his purse that had around Rs 2,000 in cash. As soon as we reached the spot, we rushed Tolia to NUlife Hospital in Ghatkopar," added the inspector.

Chaudhary was found at her home in Bhatwadi and placed under arrest under Sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 397 (Robbery, or dacoity, with attempt to cause death or grievous hurt).

Meanwhile, in another twist, doctors at Rajawadi Hospital said that Chaudhary had initially claimed that she was a mere witness to the attack. She claimed she had sustained minor injuries at the time and was treated at Rajawadi for bruises. However, the police revealed that Chaudhary was guilty and brought her in again for a medical examination.

"She had no remorse over her act and was co-operative while speaking to the on-duty casualty medical officer," said an on-duty police constable. Dr Tolia is now stable and under medical observation.
