Srinagar-Leh highway to be shut from Wednesday

Srinagar: With the onset of winter, the 434-km Srinagar-Leh National Highway, the only road linking the frontier region of Ladakh with rest of Jammu and Kashmir, will be shut for vehicular traffic beginning Wednesday.

"No vehicle will be allowed to cross Zojilla Pass, connecting Kashmir with the frontier region of Ladakh, from December one," Divisional Commissioner (Kashmir) Asgar Hassan Samoon said.

Zojilla Pass, 107-km from Srinagar, experiences heavy snowfall during the winter and the highway remains shut for at least six months in a year.

The highway was closed following snowing on November 25 but was reopened temporarily for clearing stranded vehicles.

All the vehicles stranded at Kargil were allowed to move towards Srinagar on November 28 and today the vehicles were allowed to move from Srinagar to Kargil, the spokesman said.
