Stampede at New Delhi station not for the first time

New Delhi: Two persons were killed and eight injured on Sunday afternoon in a stampede triggered by a last minute change in platforms for two trains at the Station, facing summer rush. But it is not for the first time that people have lost lives in such a stampede.

Six years ago on November 13, a similar stampede claimed the lives of five women, including a teenage girl, when they jostled to get into Patna-bound Jan Sadharan Express to reach their native place.

In 2004, Diwali, Eid-Ul-Fitr and Chhat come together within a span of one week time and there has been unusual surge of passengers for East-bound trains, especially for Bihar, from the capital.

A last minute change in the platform, like what appeared to have happened this time, triggered a stampede with people falling over one another. Five persons were killed and 10 others injured in that incident.
