Mumbai:
Excited Mumbaikars were out in full strength for the Mumbai Marathon on Sunday.
The Seventh Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon got underway in the city amidst tight security and elaborate arrangements. The prize money this year for the full marathon is close to 1.5 crore rupees.
Over 38,000 people, including Mumbaikars, foreigners, senior citizens and students, took part in different categories in total 42 km long marathon, which has been honored with the 'Marathon Flame' from Greece, recognising the growing popularity of the event that began seven years ago.
Celebrities like Akshay Kumar, Gul Panag, Rahul Bose, John Abraham, Reitsh Deshmukha and Gulshan Grover added the star power to the race, which started from Chhatrpati Shivaji Terminus.
Tina Ambani, wife of industrialist Anil Ambani, was present to cheer the senior citizens. She boosted their morale by cheering and clapping.
"There is so much enthusiasm among them. They have feelings and emotions that inspire them to come out and run. It is our duty to encourage them and tell them to live life to the fullest," Tina Ambani said. A couple married for 78 years also participated in the event.
Akshay, impressed by the seniors on the run, said more than giving them any inspiration, he had come to take inspiration and blessings from them.
