Kanpur:
A senior surgeon has been suspended for allegedly leaving a towel in a woman's abdomen during a gall bladder operation.
The incident came to light when Nirmala Devi, a resident of Shastri Nagar in Kanpur, complained of stomach ache two months after undergoing operation at Ursala hospital.
"The woman complained of stomach ache, infection and pus in the area of incision after she was discharged by the Senior Surgeon A K Shukla," the Chief Medical Officer Ashok Mishra said.
Hospital's another doctor Jogendra Singh did a CT scan and detected a foreign body. Devi was again operated upon and a towel was removed from her abdomen, the CMO said.
Dr Shukla has been suspended on grounds of negligence and a five-member committee has been formed to enquire into the case, the CMO said, adding disciplinary action will be taken if the probe finds Shukla guilty.
The woman is out of danger and has been discharged, said the Hospital's Director D P Mishra.
