Symbiosis student who was injured in expressway mishap loses hand

Pune: One of the six students of Symbiosis International University, who met with an accident at Kamshet, on the Pune-Mumbai expressway early on Sunday, has lost his right hand, doctors said on Monday.

The mishap claimed the life of Aniruddh Singh Hada (19), a resident of Kota in Rajasthan, who succumbed to his serious injuries on the spot.

The students had gone to Lonavla on Saturday and were returning to the city at 5 am on Sunday when the victim lost control over the car, which hit the median before turning turtle.

An ambulance of Lokmanya Hospital in Nigdi rushed to the spot. The five survivors were in shock when admitted to the hospital.

Doctors at the Lokmanya Hospital had to amputate the right hand of Abhishek Gupta (18).

"His hand was crushed and bones and muscles damaged, so it was important that a quick decision be taken to amputate his hand. Had this not been done, the patient could have lost his life due to excessive bleeding," said spokesperson of the hospital, Dr Shrikrishna Joshi.

The amputation was also necessary to prevent the infection from spreading to other parts of his body, he added.

Two other students, Suyash Lunawat and Shashank Tulsyan, who suffered head injuries, are stable and out of danger.

"They have been kept in the intensive care unit under observation," the doctors added. The remaining two students, Rajat Agarwal and Animesh Gupta, were discharged after treatment.

"The students stay in a rented apartment at Keshar Kunj in Shivajinagar, Pune, and are in the first year of the bachelor of business administration (BBA) course in Symbiosis," the doctor-in-charge, Dr Umesh Jadhav said.
