Chennai:
The Tamil Nadu government has proposed to make all auto rickshaws, running on petrol, liquified natural gas-compliant to meet growing demands for private transportation and at the same time ensure lesser impact on environment.
At a function here, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi presented ten of the 8000 auto rickshaw permits across the state to beneficiaries today, a state government release here said.
These vehicles will run on LNG and the state government was taking steps to make all auto rickshaws running on petrol LNG-complaint, while placing importance on environment.
The conversion will be done in a phased manner.
Chennai alone had 29 LNG refilling stations, the release added.
Some 3100 persons in Chennai and 4900 elsewhere in the state were issued permits today, the release said.
Auto rickshaws play an important role in the private transportation sector in the state with the yellow-painted three-wheeler criss-crossing almost every street of Chennai.
The government had issued directives in May this year removing the 12 year-ban on issuing permits to auto rickshaws, considering the growing demand for private transportation modes.
