A Sri Lankan Tamil refugee was arrested on charges of cheating a group of Sri Lankan refugees to the tune of Rs 58 lakh promising them to send to Australia for jobs.
The 'Q' branch police, following a tip-off, intercepted the bus carrying 37 Sri Lankan refugees at Kollidam Tollgate near Tiruchirappalli on Monday.On questioning them, it was revealed that
Sudarsanan and three others,who were absconding, had collected about Rs 1.5 lakh each from them promising jobs in Australia.
The refugees told the police that Sudarsanan had asked them to assemble at Puzhal near Chennai on Sunday night and taken them to various temples in the district and Srirangam stating that due to strict vigil in Chennai coast they would be sent to Australia from Pudukottai coast by a boat.
Police said the refugees,including 11 women and 5 children, belonged to various camps including the ones in Mandapam, Kanyakumari, Salem, Namakkal and Vazhavandan Kottai and they were sent back to their respective camps after questioning.
Cases under various sections of IPC including 420 (cheating) were registered against Sudarsan, who was remanded to judicial custody on Monday night, police said.
