Swapnali Lad, a 24-year-old software engineer, is battling for her life in a hospital near Mumbai after she jumped from a moving rickshaw, allegedly to escape a bid to kidnap her.
The police claim that on Saturday night, Ms Lad, who works with software giant Tata Consultancy Services or TCS in Mumbai was headed home from work when witnesses saw her screaming and then jumping out of the auto.
She was rushed to hospital by bystanders and has been unconscious ever since. Doctors have performed two major surgeries on her.
The police suspect the auto driver, who is missing, tried to take Ms Lad on a route that seemed suspicious to her.
