Kolkata:
A teacher of a reputed English medium school in Kolkata was on Tuesday arrested and sent to 10 days police custody for allegedly demanding a laptop with an Internet connection to promote a student.
Sanjay Smart was arrested from his residence at Thakurpukur for making the demand to the parents of a student of Class IV, a senior police officer said.
The arrest was made on the basis of an FIR filed by Partha Pratim Banerjee, the father of the student, at the Shakespeare Sarani Police station on May two.
The teacher was produced in court and remanded to police custody till May 28.
Smart had sought anticipatory bail from a lower court and then the high court following registration of an FIR against him, but it was rejected both times.
The student's father had alleged that Smart, the class teacher of Class IV, had demanded a laptop with an Internet connection for promoting his son Srijan.
When it was refused, the teacher mentally torture his son, Banerjee claimed, adding he then gave him a desktop computer.
The teacher, however, was not satisfied and did not promote the student accusing him of cheating in examinations which left him traumatised, according to the complaint.
The father alleged that when he took up the matter with the principal, he was asked to take a transfer
certificate for his son.
