Guntur:
An 18-year-old student in Andhra Pradesh's Guntur was allegedly accosted by two men while on she was on her way to junior college on Friday. They reportedly forced her to drink a toxic liquid, suspected to be pesticide.
She is recovering in hospital. The police said the girl had been attacked for refusing to accept the proposal of a man who claimed to be in love with her. The accused are said to be friends of the man who wanted to marry her.
The girl was on her way to college in an autorickshaw when the two men, friends of Sunil, the man whose attention she had allegedly spurned, forced their way into the vehicle.
They then asked her if she would agree to marry Sunil, the police said. When the girl said she would not, the two men allegedly forced her to swallow a liquid that they had brought along with them in a bottle.
The police have registered a case of attempt to murder against the men, who escaped. They have seized the bottle of liquid and have sent it for a forensic examination.
The police said the girl's father and brother had been booked for attempt to murder last month for allegedly stabbing Sunil, who is a lorry driver and lives in the same neighbourhood.
