Hyderabad: Kalyani's parents said they had found their 14-year-old daughter in her bedroom this morning with burns all over her face. They rushed her to hospital but she could not be saved.

The Class 9 student was the victim of an acid attack, her parents told the police in a village near Nizamabad in Andhra Pradesh, where they live. They alleged that a stranger had shown up at their home asking for water, and Kalyani had assisted him. This man, they said, had likely assaulted her.

The chief minister has ordered that the case be solved in 24 hours, and that the police arrest whoever is guilty.

But police sources say that interrogation of the parents has suggested that their version of events may not be reliable. They say that Kalyani's father returned from Dubai a few weeks ago and was unhappy to discover that she was mingling with boys her age. They believe that the teenager was questioned by her parents on Wednesday night, and that she was then attacked at home in a fit of rage. They say that the parents then poured acid over her face.
