Ten killed as van turns turtle in Gujarat

Rajkot, Gujarat: Ten people of a family, including seven women, were killed and ten others seriously injured when a passenger van in which they were travelling turned turtle near Bagodara here, police said today.

Twenty two people of a Bharwad (shepherd) family were returning home to Surat from Bhavnagar late on Thursday night after attending a family function, when the accident occurred, they said.

The driver lost control while trying to overtake a truck and the van overturned killing seven women, two children and a man on the spot. The injured were rushed to Sir T hospital in Bhavnagar, police said.

The deceased were identified as Janu Chela Bharvad, 3, Tidi Bhura, 50, Jassi Ajubhai, 28, Jeevu Nanubhai, 70, Raiya Ranchhod, 35, Shantu Bhurabhai, 50, Valli Gabhrubhai, 22, Laxmi Bharvad, 65, Hakka Jeram, 40, and a six month old child, police said.

A complaint has been lodged against the van driver, who is absconding, police said.
