Terrace parapet walk claims teen's life in Mumbai

Mumbai: A clique of teenagers had bunked college and hopped over to a friend's place for an informal get-together. It ended with the death an 18-year-old boy who fell off the terrace of the building where the friend lived.

On Thursday evening, Chembur resident Nikhil Donde, fell from the seven-storey Vighnaharta society building in Prateeksha Nagar, Sion. The girl's parents were away at that time.

The six friends, including two girls, were Std XII science students.

The youngsters had gone to the terrace where the boys were jumping across the narrow gap that separated the two wings of the building.

"The six of them had gone to the terrace. The boys were jumping on the periphery of the terrace which is adjacent to the neighbouring wing.

Nikhil unknowingly moved to another side of the terrace from where he fell," said Police Sub-Inspector Santosh Shinde of Wadala Truck Terminus Marg police station.

"We have not filed any case yet. No case has been filed yet and investigations are going on."

He was declared dead at Sion Hospital.

"He was close to his friends. The boys too visited our home often," said Nikhil's father Dilip, who works for a gas cylinder agency. Nikhil's friends informed his father about the accident after Nikhil was taken to hospital.

However, Nikhil's parents, who say their son who had a phobia of heights, suspect foul play. "The terrace had a 4-ft-high parapet and this can't be an accident," said the boy's father.

Nikhil's mother, Laxmi said, "Someone called me and asked about Nikhil's father.

Later, when I contacted Nikhil, some boy picked up the phone and after a discussion with someone else disconnected, saying it was a wrong number," said Laxmi.

"They were grown-ups, not children to play such a game," said a resident of the society, requesting anonymity. "The terrace parapet is high enough to prevent someone from falling off."
