Tezpur:
At least six persons have died due to diarrhoea and over 200 affected by the disease in
Sonitpur district of Assam along the borders with Arunachal Pradesh since the last one week, a senior district official said on Tuesday.
The victims were from the tea garden dominated areas along Balichang and Pavoi villages under Biswanath subdivision, said Deputy Commissioner Rajesh Prasad.
The dead in Balichang are 11-year-old Sivani Khodal and her 30-year-old mother Mamoni Khodal, her 60-year-old grand-mother Kalawati Khodal, 65-year-old Dipali Bhumij, while in Pavoi area Ajoy Kandulana a minor 14-month old child and his 32-year-old mother Jeuti Kandulana.
The people had taken ill since September 14 in the tea estate dominated areas due to the disease contaminated drinking water in Tezpur, Prasad said.
Medical facilities had been provided to the villages for the treatment of the sick, he said, adding, on Tuesday the district administration had rushed a special medical team to the
affected areas.
