Thane: A major fire broke out at a petrol pump on the Ghodbunder road in Thane at about 7 this evening.
It was brought under control in about 45 minutes, an official said.
Satosh Kadam, the officer in charge of the Disaster Control Room of Thane Municipal Corporation, said the petrol pump was situated at the Kasarwadavali intersection, and four fire engines and water tankers were rushed there.
Chief Fire Officer Arvind Mandke said the fire broke out while the petrol was being emptied into the main tank from a tanker.
The static electricity generated during the decanting could have caused the fire, he said.
The pump is owned by Dilip Harishchandra Patil.
Timely action by the firemen averted a major mishap, Mandke added.
