Mumbai:
A Shiv Sena leader, Mohan Raut, was shot dead in broad daylight this morning in Badlapur in Thane.
Raut was shot in the stomach and legs by unidentified gunmen, who fired four rounds from a country made revolver, at his office in the Katrap area of Badlapur.
Raut collapsed in his office and the gunmen fled the scene. His party men who rushed into the office on hearing the shots immediately moved him to a hospital.
Raut was rushed to AIMS hospital in Dombivli, where he succumbed to his injuries.
"We are not sure how many people attacked him. Investigations are on in this case and we will catch the culprits", Joint Commissioner of Police VV Lakshminarayana told reporters.
Raut, who was an ex-corporator from Sena, was presently posted as vice-president of Shiv Sena party in Badlapur.
Raut's wife and his brother's wife are sitting corporators in the Badlapur Municipal Council. The family suspects political rivalry could have led to his killing.
The local Shiv Sena unit forced shopkeepers to down shutters after the incident.
