Warangal, Andhra Pradesh:
Three labourers from Madhya Pradesh drowned in an irrigation tunnel in Vasantapur village of this district in Andhra Pradesh, police said today.
The incident occurred in Sayampet mandal here at around midnight when a nearby tank breached and a huge quantity of water entered into the Godavari lift irrigation tunnel, they said.
"Some workers who were in the tunnel were washed away by the heavy inflow of water and among them three persons drowned and two others were seriously injured, while the remaining labourers came out safely," police said.
The deceased were identified as Dhiraj, Dayanidhi and Bicchu, all belonging to Madhya Pradesh.
Following the mishap, other workers blamed the private company undertaking tunnel works in this area of failing to comply with safety measures.
Efforts are on to retrieve the bodies from the tunnel.
Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy has directed the Warangal District Collector Rahul Bojja to inspect the incident site and submit a report, besides supervising the rescue work.
