Cuttack:
A fast track court in Cuttack on Monday sentenced three persons to rigorous imprisonment (RI) for seven years each in the sensational Khan Nagar pornographic CD case which led a 22-year-old woman commit suicide in 2008.
The Fast Track court headed by Biranchi Narayan Mishra found the accused guilty under Section 306 (abetting suicide), 34 (common intention), 500 (defamation) and 417 (cheating) of the IPC and Section 6 of Indecent Representation of Women Act.
Besides the RI, Prime accused Astaraga Sahu (26) was fined Rs 10,000, Rs 5000, Rs 1000 and Rs 500 for separate charges he was convicted.
Two other accused, CD parlour owner Manas Sahu and his associate Amaresh Sahu, were found guilty on all counts except under cheating charges. The court, however, exonerated Astarags associate Subrat Pradhan for lack of evidence.
Mass communication student Asima Mohanty had hanged herself in her Khan Nagar resident on August 13, 2008. Her father lodged a police complaint that his daughter did this as she was being blackmailed by Astaraga and his friends after recording her obscene photographs and circulating them in grey market by making CDs.
Astaraga was an acquaintance of the girl's family and was closed to the girl for several months. After coaxing the girl to have sex with him, he recorded it sometimes in October 2007 with a hidden camera and made CDs of it which were then sold to the local market as well as in Kolkata. Police had recovered at least seven CDs from a video parlour in Badambadi bus terminus area.
