Three killed as car rams into garbage truck in Mumbai

Mumbai: Three persons, including a woman said to be a former Kabbadi player, were killed after their car rammed into a stationary garbage collection truck at suburban Vikhroli on Thursday, police said.

The deceased were identified as Harish Gavankar, his wife Sanjivni and his sister-in-law Shubhangi Naik, they said.

The car being driven by Harish rammed into a civic body owned garbage collection truck parked on Eastern Express Highway this afternoon, they said.

Sanjivni is said to be a former Kabbadi player who represented Maharashtra, police said, adding that they were yet to verify this.

A civic employee Faridullah Khan was arrested for alleged negligence in duty, as he was supposed to direct the vehicles on the road since the truck was parked, they said. As per the norms, a municipal corporation employee should man the vehicles in case the garbage collection truck is parked, police said.
