Three sanitary workers asphyxiated

Coimbatore: Three sanitary workers died of asphyxiation while cleaning a septic tank of a hotel near the Airport here today and three persons arrested in this connection.

Police said one person accidentally fell into the tank when the cleaning operations were on. The other two fell into it while trying to rescue him and died after inhaling poisonous gas inside, police said.

Two contractors of a private agency which had employed the workers and an engineer of the hotel were arrested, police said.

Relatives refused to receive the bodies from the Government Hospital after post-mortem, seeking compensation from the hotel management and also government, which resulted in
traffic disruption for some time.

State Rural Industries Minister, Pongalur N Palanisamy, Collector, P.Umanath, City Police Commissioner, Sylendra Babu and Mayor, R Venkatachalam  consoled the relatives.

While Palanisamy assured the next of kin Rs.one lakh each as immediate compensation, the Mayor promised to provide a job for one of the relatives of each deceased in the corporation.

Umanath ordered seizure of all lorries and equipment of underground drainage cleaning agencies, which were functioning without proper license, as it was brought to his notice that the agency concerned was without valid license.
