Firozabad:
After several policemen were caught on camera in Uttar Pradesh kicking, slapping and using canes to hit a group of women protesters, three junior cops at the Rasoolpur police station in Firozabad have been suspended. (Caught on camera: cops thrashed, kicked women protestors)
But no action has been announced against their boss, a man named Shriprakash Yadav, the station house officer, who is seen on camera in a woolen cap and jacket, kicking a woman cowering on the ground. He is also seen repeatedly slapping another protester.
Senior cops said they are waiting for a report by the circle office to decide whether or not to act against Mr Yadav.
The women were protesting against the death of two labourers in a collision last night between the minivan they were in and a truck. They blocked the highway between Lucknow and Agra demanding the arrest of the truck driver.
The Congress has slammed the Akhilesh Yadav government in the state. "The situation is very bad in UP. The police let off those responsible for the accident and they lathi-charged the women...Even the police and administration seem like they are Samajwadi Party workers," said Congress leader, Raj Babbar.
There have been incidents before of police highhandedness being caught on camera in UP. Rival parties accuse the Samajwadi Party government and its young chief minister Mr Yadav of a complete breakdown of law and order in the state.
