Kolkata: A 35 year-old woman was injured by a tiger in Gosaba area of the Sundarbans in South 24 Parganas district this morning, officials said.
The tiger had strayed out of Pirkhali forest and swam 2 km across the Vidya river before reaching Sonargaon village, they said.
The woman was out in the open when she was attacked and sustained injuries on head, nose and neck. The animal fled when the villagers, hearing the woman's shrieks, attacked it with sticks, they added.
The tiger then took shelter in a cow shed and the villagers blocked its door and reported the incident to the forest department officials.
The department authorities gave tranquiliser shot to the tiger before taking it away, they added.
The woman has been hospitalized.
