Top Indian grapplers to flex muscles on the Jaipur mats

Jaipur: The medal winners of India who brought laurels to the country during the recently concluded Commonwealth Games will be seen in action during the National University Wrestling Championship to be held at University of Rajasthan from Friday.

Gold medallist Geeta Rani, silver medallist Babita Kumari and bronze medallist Suman Kundu would compete with hundreds to wrestlers during the championship which will be organised in Jaipur. Seventy nine teams in men's category while 39 teams in women's category from various universities will compete in the championship.

Organising secretary of the event Bhupendra Singh Rathore said, "The Commonwealth Games medallists have already arrived in the city. Almost all the teams, who have agreed to take part in the event, have arrived in the city."

The organising committee measured the weights of the wrestlers till late on Thursday evening to take out draw of the competitions in different categories. Twenty two-year-old Haryana wrestler, Geeta Rani, had won gold by defeating Emily Bensted of Australia in the Commonwealth Games in 55kg freestyle event and her sister Babita, who won silver will also be seen in action during the wresting event, Rathore said.

Suman, another girl from Haryana, who won bronze in the 63kg category in CWG will also vie with other wrestlers of the country. The three girls will be the wrestlers to watch out for. During the event defending champion Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut will put blood and sweat to retain the title. The university had top position in both men's and women's category during the last event.

Rajasthan's hopes rest on Satyawrat Kadyan, who won a bronze medal in the Youth Olympics held in Singapore a couple of months ago. Besides, there are more than hundred wrestlers of the country who would test their strength and acumen in the championship.
