Train engine catches fire at Ghorpadi, no casualties

Pune: The engine of the Mumbai-bound Latur-Mumbai Express caught fire in the wee hours of Thursday at Ghorpadi, but no casualties were reported.

The train had left Pune station and was at the railway crossing in Ghorpadi when the incident took place. Railway sources said thick smoke engulfed the diesel engine and the drivers immediately got down to inspect the engine.

"Although the exact reason for the outbreak of the fire is yet to be ascertained, initial reports suggest that there could have been a short circuit that led to the fire,'' sources added.

The railways have ordered an enquiry into the incident.

Another engine was attached to the train and it left after a delay of about two hours. Since it was early in the morning, most passengers were asleep.

The duty officer of Pune fire brigade station, Vihay Bhilare, said the staff received a call from railway authorities at around 4.30 am. "We reached the spot within 10 minutes and doused the fire within 10 minutes,'' he added.
