Pune:
A 20-year-old youth Mangesh Sudhir Kulkarni allegedly committed suicide on Monday afternoon by hanging himself at his residence in Mahanand Society at Kothrud.
The police sub-inspector of Kothrud police station, Anand Walimbe, said Mangesh hanged himself in the kitchen.
The reason for the suicide was not ascertained till late night.
Walimbe said the victim was pursuing his HSC studies externally. His father works in a private telecom company in the city while his mother is a yoga teacher.
Police officials said a friend of the victim had asked the latter to return Rs70 that he had borrowed from him.
Senior police inspector Chandrakant Godke said the police have questioned the concerned friend on the issue.
"But the friend told us that he said he had only asked Mangesh to return the money. We are investigating the case. But prima facie, it appears that a person will not commit suicide over such a small issue,'' he added, stating that the reason why he took such a drastic step will be only clear after his parents' statements are recorded.
The body has been sent to Sassoon General Hospital for post-mortem.
