Two booked for attack on woman cop

Erode: Police have registered cases against two persons for allegedly attacking a woman Sub-Inspector at Nambiyur.

Police said the incident occurred during a temple festival conducted at Kosanam village near Nambiyur three days ago when two groups of devotees belonging to two different communities wanted to perform pooja, leading to an altercation. Following this, police closed the temple, the sources said.

A member of a group, one Thangavelu, lodged a complaint against the other group and quarreled with the SI at the police station last evening protesting the 'delay' in registering the case under 'SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act and allegedly pushed her. Another member had also accompanied him.

The SI had told him that such such cases should be investigated and registered by Deputy Superintendent of Police.

The SI, who was injured, was admitted to hospital. Thangavelu, said to belong to the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, also got himself admitted to the Government Hospital, Gobichettipalayam and lodged a complaint against the SI.

Police are maintaining tight vigil to prevent any untoward incidents.
