Two killed by leopards in Kashmir

Kupwara, J&K: A woman was among two persons, who were mauled to death by wild leopards in separate incidents in Kupwara district of north Kashmir, officials said today.

A leopard strayed into village Satkoji in Handwara, 90 kms from here, and attacked a group of youth playing in a field last evening, they said.

Mohammad Iqbal (20) died on the spot, while another youth Nazir Ahmad was injured in the attack. The animal later fled into the nearby forest.

A middle-aged woman identified as Raja Begum was killed when she was attacked by a leopard at nearby Lawoosa-Mawar forest when she had gone to the area to collect fire wood, they said.

Earlier this month, two children were mauled to death by wild leopards in Handwara raising the toll in man-animal conflict to four.

As per official figures, 35 people have been killed and 370 others injured in attacks by wild animals in the Valley during the past two years. Over a dozen leopards and black bears were also killed by the angry villagers during the same period.
