Ujjain: The Vice-Chancellor of a university in Ujjain was attacked on Monday, allegedly by radical saffron groups, for asking students to help the flood-hit people of Jammu and Kashmir. He complained of chest pain and was rushed to hospital, where he was admitted immediately.
The police have filed a First Information Report against unknown workers of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal.
Jawahar Lal Kaul, the Vice-Chancellor of Vikram University, had also appealed to local landlords to waive rent for Kashmiri students.
Shortly afterwards, an angry mob entered the university campus, damaging furniture and computers. Then they entered the Chancellor's office, had a heated argument with him and vandalised the place.
The saffron workers were angry with Mr Kaul's stance. They had questioned why people like him did not issue similar statements when floods hit Uttarakhand and Gujarat states, police said.
No arrest has been made so far, said Vijay Kumar Dawar, the Deputy Superintendent of Police. But the police would use CCTV footage of the vice-chancellor's office and take action against those responsible, he said.
Eight years ago, Professor HS Sabharwal had died of cardiac arrest in Ujjain after he was allegedly manhandled by Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad workers. The court, however, had acquitted all the accused.
