UK woman of Indian origin commits suicide in Mumbai hotel

Mumbai: A British woman of Indian origin on Thursday allegedly committed suicide by jumping from the sixth floor of a plush hotel in suburban Juhu, police said.

Sunanda Valan, working as a receptionist at a hospital in England, had come to Mumbai this morning with her husband Ajay and checked in Ramee Guestline Hotel around 6 am.

"After checking in, they went for a walk on the Juhu beach and returned around 8 am. Ajay, who works as a security man at an airport in England, told us that she was roaming in the hotel premises and jumped off the open terrace on the sixth floor," Ashok Pimpale, Inspector at Juhu police station said.

"We have informed Sunanda's parents in England and they are expected to arrive in Mumbai soon," Pimpale said.

The body has been sent to Copper Hospital for postmortem.

"No suicide note was found. We will go through the CCTV footage which may help us in the matter," Pimpale said.

The couple had an arranged marriage eight years ago and had no children.

"The couple had come to India for a 15-day trip. They went to Ahmedabad on October 29 where Ajays relatives stay," he said adding that further probe was on.
