US power major to invest in Bihar

Patna: The US-based energy major AES Corporation has evinced interest insetting up a thermal power plant in Bihar, bringing good news to powercrisis-plagued
state after majority of thermal power units fell on the Jharkhand side after the bifurcation in November 2000.
    
The AES Corporation has submitted a proposal to State IndustrialPromotion Board (SIPB) for setting up the thermal power plant atJagidishpur in Bhagalpur district, Principal Energy Secretary Ravikanttold PTI here.
   
He said AES (India) Pvt Ltd has submitted a letter of 'expression ofinterest' (EOI) to the SIPB for setting up the plant with an investmentof around Rs 8,000 crore.
    
In its offer letter to the SIPB, the US energy giant said that if thecompany was allowed to set up its power generating unit, the stategovernment could expect foreig direct investment (FDI) of up to USD 500million (around Rs
2,300 crore).
