Villagers clash with police in Sultanpur

Sultanpur: Villagers of Tantiyanagar in Uttar Pradesh's Sultanpur clashed with policemen after they were being forcibly removed from the Allahabad-Faizabad state highway today.

They were protesting against the arrest of a local criminal Bablu Nishaad who belongs to the Mallah community. The Tantiyanagar village is dominated by Mallah's.

The villagers were armed with lathis and also pelted stones on the policemen. The police also fired tear gas shells to disperse the crowds.

Local media crews were caught between the clashing villagers and cops.

Around five to 10 policemen sustained minor injuries. It is however not known how many villagers have been injured in the clashes.

The police have cleared the highway and the traffic on the route has been restored.

To maintain law and order, the district police has asked for reinforcements from the neighbouring districts of Chatrapati Sahuji Maharaj Nagar and Faizabad. A unit of the provincial armed constabulary will also reach the district by tomorrow morning.
