The police handled the security in the city admirably well during the year despite having to deal with a series of challenges in form of agitations and communal violence, top officials said on Wednesday.
"This year posed all kinds of problems for the city police. It was the toughest year for us due to agitations, anxious moments over Ram Janmabhoomi judgement and communal violence in some parts of the city in March. Despite that we tried to maintain smile on our faces," Police Commissioner A K Khan told the reporters while reviewing the annual performance of the department.
Giving statistics, he said there were 120 kidnap cases and 128 murders registered in the city against 107 and 154 respectively in 2009. In all, there were 17,045 cases registered for different crimes in 2010 as against 17,830 last year.
He said the city police got a shot in the arm after they arrested important modules like Shaik Khaja who had close links with Harkatul Jehad Islami, Huji-B, LeT and JeM functioning under the guidance of ISI.
Referring to shortage of manpower, he said the shortage had hit the force considerably and hoped that the situation would improve in 2011.
There were 284 vacancies of sub-inspectors which was impacting field-level policing, he pointed out.
The police were able to recover stolen property in 31.32 per cent of the cases against 56.5 per cent in 2009.
