Will Mulund-Ghatkopar metro stretch till Thane?

Mumbai: The Mulund-Ghatkopar metro rail project which was scheduled to begin in the sixth phase will now kick-off earlier than expected.

Officials are checking if this route can be extended till Thane.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has given a green signal for extension of scheduled Mulund-Borivli mono rail upto Dahisar.

In June, MLC Charan Singh Sapra proposed that the Mulund-Ghatkopar metro rail project be taken up in fourth phase.

"The authorities have neglected development of transport systems in the eastern suburbs, hence I had raised the point. Earlier the project was to start in the sixth phase, but now they have agreed to start work in the fourth phase," added Sapra, who received a letter from the state agency confirming the development.

The Mulund Ghatkopar metro rail will cover a stretch of 12.4km. Also, there will be a skywalk to connect to the suburban section.

Currently, the alignments of the Mulund and Ghatkopar metro rail are under consideration. The contractor is working on route feasibility and is considering both LBS Marg and Eastern Express Highway for this rail route.

"We are checking the feasibility for the project (Mulund and Ghatkopar metro rail) and once a detailed project report is submitted by the contractor we can begin with this project. We are checking if this route can be extended till Thane," informed K Vijayalakshmi, additional chief of division (transport and communication) of the MMRDA.

Apart from this, the state agency has also planned extension of Mulund-Borivli monorail till Dahisar. In the absence of east-west connectivity, commuters have to go via Ghodbunder Road to reach Borivli.
