Mumbai: The frail woman who lives in Jogeshwari (W), says she has waited for 27 years and is still determined to bring her son's killers to book. She has been running from pillar to post to get the accused, Vasant Raghunath Dhoble who was a police sub-inspector then, punished. Dhoble is presently posted as Assistant Commissioner of Police at the police headquarters.
Abdul was allegedly beaten up in the police lock-up and died after he was granted bail, his mother claimed. Abdul had been arrested for beating up his friend, Vishnu, while in an inebriated condition.
"It's been really a long time," recalled the octogenarian. "I want the CBI to take charge of my case. Right now, the inquiry against the policeman [Dhoble] is handed over to other policemen. How can that ever get me justice?"
Kairunisa said that a month ago, she had sent a letter to the Chief Justice with a request to look into the matter. "In 2003, the Supreme Court had ordered an inquiry, but the state did not act on the order," she added.
In December 1983, the Khan family moved the sessions court, accusing Dhoble of having caused Abdul's death. Dhoble was arrested in 1994 and sentenced to seven years jail and a fine of Rs 1 lakh. However, he managed to get bail within a week.
Dhoble then moved the high court. In 1986, he was acquitted of the charges. The same year, Abdul's family moved Supreme Court against Dhoble's acquittal.
In 2003, the Supreme Court ordered that an inquiry be conducted against Dhoble and also against those who had delayed filing the FIR. The state DGP, under the Chief Secretary, was ordered to look into the matter.
