Woman abandons daughter, court asks cops to trace

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Tuesday directed the city police to trace a woman, who abandoned her one-and-half-year-old daughter with her aged in-laws following separation from her husband.

In an unusual case, the grandfather of the baby moved the court seeking its intervention as the infant's father has been missing for more than a year following matrimonial discord with his wife.

A Division Bench headed by Justice A K Sikri directed the police to produce Baby Gudia's mother and file a status report by May 21.

The Bench passed the order on a petition filed by Sardar Baldev Singh, the grandfather, seeking protection and care for the child as the baby had not taken any food for the past few days.

According to Singh, his son Preetam got married to Rajinder Kaur in February 2008. He claimed that a month after the marriage the daughter-in-law left the matrimonial home and started staying with her parents.

Meanwhile, his son failed to resolve the dispute with his wife and left the house. The family has no clue about him till the date, Singh added.

Baby Gudia was born in December 2008 and was in the custody of the mother but suddenly the girl's mother along with some of her relatives came and left the child in his home on May 4.

Alleging that police did not do anything on a complaint against the mother for abandoning the child, Singh sought the court to pass a direction for the protection and care of the baby under Juvenile Justices Act and appropriate legal action against the mother.
