Gorakhpur: The woman, who was allegedly set on fire by the Samajwadi Party MLA from Uttar Pradesh on Thursday, succumbed to her injuries on Friday evening in Gorakhpur. Savitri Devi was declared dead by the Gorakhpur Medical College and Hospital at 5.30 pm today.

An FIR was registered against Sripat Azad, Samajwadi Party MLA from Maharajganj in Uttar Pradesh, for allegedly setting a woman ablaze. The MLA is missing and the police are looking for him.

The MLA and Savitri Devi were allegedly having an affair.

The victim's son, a minor, claims the MLA was a frequent visitor.  According to the FIR filed by the son, Azad allegedly set the woman on fire after an argument.

"They were having a major fight while they were having dinner. He threw his plate away and threw kerosene oil on my mother and then he set her ablaze. After doing so he ran out of the window," said the victim's son.

However, the woman had denied the son's version of events. In a statement on Thursday she said, "I was in the kitchen when my clothes caught fire. My son came inside running to help me. What my son is saying is not true. He is young. He is probably saying this under the influence of someone."
