Thane: A 22-year-old married woman from Mumbra was arrested for allegedly kidnapping a new born child, who was rescued later, police said on Friday.
The accused, Preeti Patil, was booked under provisions of section 363 of the IPC after her arrest last evening, police sources said.
The incident took place on Wednesday when Suvarna Pawar delivered a baby boy at the Balaji Hospital in Diva. The accused, who posed as a pregnant woman, befriended Suvarna and hatched a conspiracy to lift the child.
The baby was abducted after the accused offered to carry him for administering medical doses to Dombivali while travelling in a public transport.
While the duo got down at Dombvili there was no trace of the woman carrying the child.
Enquiry revealed that she had already got down at Kopar.
Immediately, the distressed father and husband lodged a complaint with Mumbra police which began a search for the lady. Later they came to know that the accused was working with the same hospital for a couple of days in January.
They traced her with the help of the cell in Diva and rescued the child within hours.
