Woman dies after head injuries at Nokia factory

Chennai: A 22-year-old woman, working at Finnish handset major Nokia's manufacturing facility at Sriperumbudur, died following an accident at the unit, company sources said today.

The deceased, identified as Ambica, was working at the manual loader-phase three during the second shift on Sunday when the accident happened, sources  said.

Her head and neck got jammed in the loader and she sustained severe injuries. She was rushed to a hospital at Sriperumbudur but succumbed to injuries.

Ambica, hailing from Vellore district, was her family's only bread winner.

A company spokesperson said the firm was investigating the circumstances that led to the accident. "Safety and security of our employees is of utmost concern for us. Any such incident as this will be investigated properly as per factory norms and guidelines'', he said.

The factory has declared a holiday today in view of the accident, he added.

The handset manufacturer currently has around 7000 employees at the facility and women constitute 70 per cent.
