Ahmedabad: The metropolitan magistrate court sentenced a woman lawyer to 14 months imprisonment for attacking another woman. The lawyer was also fined Rs1400. According to the prosecution, advocate Jyoti Maniar had assaulted one Asha Doshi on October 31, 2004 at Nehrunagar crossroads where she had gone for Diwali shopping.
Doshi's husband was working at the office of Maniar's spouse and had filed a complaint against him.
However, on October 31, 2004 when Jyoti saw Asha in the market she began a conversation with her which soon turned into a fight. Jyoti then attacked Asha and the latter's T-shirt was torn in the scuffle.
A home guard on duty then gave his shirt to Asha to cover herself. Asha then registered a complaint against Jyoti.
The prosecution argued that the accused is a law graduate and is a guardian of the legal system. "Yet she acted in a way unbecoming of a lawyer and the court should set an example by ensuring that such acts do not go unpunished," argued Rajesh Godhra for the prosecution. The court after hearing the argument sentenced Jyoti to 14-month imprisonment.
