Salem:
Breaking convention, members of a women-self group here have performed the burial of an aged orphan who died at a government hospital.
The members of the Malar Life Trust headed by Kalaivani took the man's body to the burial ground and performed the last rites and offered prayers before burying it last evening.
Women are generally not allowed to perform the last rites in a burial ground but the group members decided to take up the challenge boldly out of concern for the neglected.
"We wanted to do good service to the neglected people, particularly orphans. We will continue to give a decent burial to the orphans in future," Kalaivani said.
In a bid to encourage the group, the Salem Corporation has donated an ambulance.
