Muzaffarnagar:
Three youths accused of attempting to rape a 16-year-old girl were let off by a community panchayat and the only punishment they received was a thrashing with shoes.
The incident took place at Bantikhera village, where the panchayat met yesterday and pulled up the three youths for their actions, Mehboob Ali, a panchayat member said.
The youths expressed regret, announced in public that they would treat the girl as their sister and accepted the punishment awarded by the panchayat members, which was a
thrashing with shoes by villagers.
The girl had alleged the three youths accosted her when she had gone to the fields.
Her parents had lodged an FIR with Babri area police but no arrests were made.
