New Delhi:
Australia won the battle of the track cycling superpowers with a lap to spare when they smashed their own Commonwealth record to take gold in the men's 4000m team pursuit on Thursday.
Australia, who have taken all but one of the nine golds on offer so far, coasted past New Zealand in a time of 3min 05.476sec at the Indira Gandhi velodrome.
The team of Jack Bobridge, Michael Freiberg, Michael Hepburn and Dale Parker had a psychological edge going into the final after setting a new record in qualifying.
Bobridge, 21, had already won the individual pursuit gold medal on Wednesday, edging out silver medallist Jesse Sergent, the top rider in the New Zealand team, having set a Games record in qualifying.
Hepburn, the bronze medallist in that race, came into Thursday's team final having produced the world's second-fastest 4000m ride of all time at this year's national championships.
In the bronze medal race, Northern Ireland were far too strong for an inexperienced India team, cruising to a win after catching their rivals mid-way through the race.
