New Delhi: Cameron Meyer celebrated a third gold medal at the Commonwealth Games on Friday as Australia's formidable endurance riders took gold and silver in the men's 25km scratch race.
Meyer, who looked comfortable and in charge from the starting hooter, punched the air as he caught teammate Michael Freiberg, who won silver, on the last lap. Zach Bell of Canada took third spot on the podium.
"The field here in Delhi is a little bit less than world championship level but if you look at the times and quality of rides over the last few days we have been sending a message out there for the future," Meyer said.
England's George Atkins and Mark Peter Christian of the Isle of Man, silver and bronze medalists respectively in the points race, were seen as medal prospects but could not live with Australians' aggression and power.
Australia were utterly dominant, winning 12 of the 14 events at the Indira Gandhi velodrome. The previous record was set in 2002 by Australia, who won eight gold medals at the Manchester Games.
